Bolt Thrower: Honour valour pride
22/10/03 || Lord K Philipson
I’m the first to admit that ever since Rickard, The Project Hate’s ex live-guitarist, introduced me to the Bolts a few years back I have looked forward to everything they release. The simplicity of the riffing and the arrangements are trademarks for Bolt and they never let the fans down with anything they launch upon us. Just like with AC/DC, if you for some fucked reason are into them, you fucking know what to expect.
With old Benediction growler Dave Ingram now in the band, and a production heavy as a tank on LSD, I give in to the force that is Bolt Thrower once again. A lot of people will most probably miss Karl’s vocals but the I sound oh-so similar to Barney Greenway grunts of Dave are all fine. Everything that is Bolt Thrower is represented on this album. No surprises whatsoever, just the straight Bolt-sound I love.
The problem with this album, though, is that there’s not really very many memorable songs here and it’s definitely not the best album they have released. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a damn good disc for sure, but I definitely rate “Mercenary” and “The IVth Crusade” higher. It’s all here though; the double bass, the crunchy riffs and the groovy sludgeness that only Bolt Thrower possess.
I find it very weird that Bolt aren’t bigger than they are when so many fuck-me-plenty bands make it big these days. England has never held many great death metal bands, but the one at the top at all times is Bolt Thrower. That’s as safe to say as stating that I’m great-looking..
Bolt Thrower is always Bolt Thrower, no more, no less. This will satisfy your every need for high quality death metal. If you don’t like it, well, you don’t have an ear for quality.
And I know I’m fucken right.
